Modern Bedroom Design Ideas and Tips

Dream up a modern bedroom oasis for a calm refuge away from the often tumultuous throes of your daily grind. Whether you choose a bold, muted or monochromatic color scheme, a modern bedroom can be pulled together many ways. For instance, one popular option is to bring together a mixture of pieces new and old. Pair the sleek lines of a new bed with elegant vintage light fixtures and old black and white photographs or art. Similarly, combine a retro headboard with modern bedding and a pendant lamp for reading. The options are virtually endless if you shop and dig around.

Headboard

The headboard is often the first thing you see when you walk into a bedroom. Take advantage of this and choose a show-stopping headboard. If you have an existing wooden frame or have found a vintage piece, update it with a fresh finish. Stark white, bright baby blue or ox blood red will provide drama and set the stage for the rest of the décor. Upholstered headboards are a modern choice and can either be purchased or designed yourself. Begin with a fabric you love and decide on a shape (a plain rectangular shape is easiest). With a thick slab of foam cut to the shape and size of the board, a staple gun and some finishing supplies you can design your own upholstered headboard.

Drapery

Drapes provide visual interest and color to the design of any bedroom. The best thing about drapes and curtains is that they can be changed out any time you want a fresh look, much easier than repainting or doing a complete overhaul. With that said, the curtains can be bold, dramatic or muted depending on the overriding color scheme. You might want to further a theme represented elsewhere. A dynamic pattern on a throw pillow can be repeated in style or hue in the drapery. Or, choose a neutral curtain but pair it with a colourful valance. Other ideas include roman blinds, screens and shades which can all be softened with the addition of a valance.

Tables and Dressers

Avoid purchasing a bedroom set and source out individual pieces. To unify the space you can always paint or stain the different pieces with the same color and use the same pulls or knobs. For bedside tables, look for an interesting shape and consider the function it will have according to your lifestyle. If you are an avid bed reader you will need a table high and wide enough to support a full size lamp to make sure the light hits your book. One idea for the dressers and an armoire is to look in the discount section of furniture stores. You can often find a good deal on items that have been knicked or scratched (which won’t matter if you plan to refinish). Matching pieces will bring the room together.

Art and Accessories

Modern accessories are an essential for finishing.  Choose throw pillows in modern prints and themes. For instance damask, geometrics, bamboo and gingham are all popular choice for prints. Fold up a quilt or a throw blanket at the end of the bed in a contrasting color. Choose lamps for the bedside tables with colourful ceramic bases and drum shades. Create your own art by framing items of interest to you. Maps, pages from vintage books, newspaper articles and other quirky items will add visual interest and a sense of personalization to the space. Another idea is to add a plant or two for a little life and energy. A single hanging plant will brighten a dull corner, while a small potted cactus or aloe vera can be tucked on a dresser or a bedside table without taking up too much space.

Nice hub. I was recently faced with the option of having someone build a Japanese style frame.

I ended up just buying one in the store. But these are some cool simple ideas.
